Having a Harmonized Heart
March’s Heart Spotlight
J. DIEKER
As we enter the final week of our Spring Clean Challenge, we focus on decluttering our hearts and minds. It may sound odd to declutter your heart, but it is truly very important. Decluttering one’s heart means examining what areas in your life are bringing or sucking you of joy. Joy is not a simple emotion of happiness. It is a deeper state of peace from which one can act cheerfully.
One way to begin spring cleaning your heart is to make a list. Ask yourself
What is bringing you joy?
Where is the “clutter” in your heart?
These could be things that are draining you of your joy or peace. So the inverse of this statement would be: What are sources of anxiety in your life?
Are there unhealthy boundaries and relationships in your life?

Once you have examined these areas in your life, challenge yourself this March by making two SMART goals. SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Time-Bound. Pick one area in your life that needs more joy. Find a specific and measurable way to achieve this. To make it attainable and realistic, have a set time that this goal will be put into practice or a deadline that it will be achieved by. Here’s an example:
Goal: Cultivate joy by increasing moments of silence.
Specific: I will set aside quiet time each day to reflect, meditate, or pray
Measurable & Time-Bound: I will do this everyday for 15 minutes
Is the goal attainable and realistic? Do I need to reorganize any parts of my day to make this happen?
This March, search for joy. It is often found in the real, the ordinary, and the concrete. The other half of this week is decluttering the mind. Click here to read how!
